Men's basketball team evens record at UMSL
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Lake Superior State evened its record in men's basketball with Saturday's 74-71 victory over Missouri-St. Louis at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Showdown.
Kyle Hunt scored 26 points, and Mike Boylan came off the bench to total 13 points and 10 rebounds for LSSU (1-1). Micah Hudson also scored 13 points for the Lakers, and Andrew Charlesworth added nine. Boylan fouled out with 3:31 to go.
LSSU led by as many as 12 points in the first half and took a 36-30 lead into intermission. While the Lakers never trailed in the second half, the Rivermen didn't give in easily.
UMSL, which also trailed by 12 when Hunt made two free throws with 3:40 remaining, cut it to four, 69-65, with 1:11 remaining. Hunt made 3-of-4 free throws during the final seven seconds to secure LSSU's win.
LSSU shot 45.5 percent from the field, including 3-of-13 from three-point range. The Lakers made 31-of-39 free throws.
Justyn Watkins totaled 25 points and eight rebounds to lead Missouri-St. Louis (1-1). UMSL shot 41.7 percent from the field, including 3-of-17 from behind the arc. The Rivermen were 18-of-24 at the free throw line.
The Lakers play their home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Northland Baptist.
