BAY CITY, Mich. - The 2017 season for the Lake Superior State University men's golf team commenced this weekend (Sept. 9-10) with the Lakers garnering 14th place at Saginaw Valley State's Al Watrous Invitational held at the Saginaw Valley Public Golf Course in Bay City, Mich.
The Lakers, under second-year head coach Andrew McKenney, carded a 301 team score in this Sunday's (Sept. 10) final round after posting a first-day score of 300 on Saturday to finish with two-round 601 team score (+25) in the 36-hole event.
Senior Jason Kerr led LSSU with a two-round 147-stroke total (71-76=147, +3) to earn an eight-way tie for 28th place.
Nick Oosterhof made his collegiate debut and would finish in a tie for 50th-place overall after firing a 151 score (74-77=151, +7). He was followed by freshman Ryan Page, who shot a 63rd-place tying 152 (81-71=152, +8) two-round score.
Junior Gavin MacIver wound up in a two-way tie for 69th place after posting a 153 (74-79=153, +9) while senior Mitchell Toth rounded out the Laker scoring lineup by tallying a 158-stroke total (81-77=158, +14), which was good for an 80th-place tie.
Freshman Isaac Lennox participated as a non-scoring individual and would take a 92nd-place tie as a result of compiling a 162 score (82-80=162, +18).
Grand Valley State won the tournament as a result of producing a tourney-record 560 score, which was 16 strokes under par and shattered the previous mark by six strokes. Hillsdale (578, +2), host Saginaw Valley State (579, +3), Findlay (582, +6), and Ashland (583, +7) rounded out the top five overall in the 16-team tourney field. The individual winner was Grand Valley State's Mitchell White, who fired a 12-under par 132 score with rounds of 67 and 65, repectively.
Lake Superior State returns to the links next weekend, Sept. 16-17, for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Invitational at the HawksHead Golf Course in South Haven, Mich.
