Lakers crush NMU, 5-1


SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State (9-7-3 overall, 6-6-1-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) defeated Northern Michigan 5-1 Friday at the Taffy Abel Arena to take a four-goal lead after the first game of the four-game, total-goals Cappo Cup series.

LSSU, which has totaled 10 goals in its last two games, started Friday's scoring in the first period with two goals from junior forward Rick Schofield (8-9--17). At 4:34 of the first period, Schofield scored a power-play goal on assists from junior defender Matt Cowie (1-4--5) and senior defender Simon Gysbers (4-6--10). Schofield's second goal of the game was an unassisted short-handed marker at 7:00 to make it 2-0. It was LSSU's first short-handed goal of the year.

Both teams fought hard through the scoreless second period.

Laker freshman forward Ben Power (2-7--9) scored his first power-play goal of the season at 4:59 of the third period on assists from sophomore forward Fred Cassiani (4-6--10) and senior forward Zac MacVoy (2-12--14). 

LSSU took a 4-0 lead at 10:12 when Cassiani tallied a power-play goal with assists from Power and junior forward Will Acton (4-6--10). Junior forward Chad Nehring (10-3--13) completed the scoring for the Lakers at 15:18 of the third. Nehring's goal came from Cowie and freshman forward Nick McParland (1-2--3).

The Wildcats (6-7-4 overall, 5-5-3-0 CCHA) took the shutout away from Laker goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson at 19:02 of the third when Phil Fox scored a power-play goal.

LSSU and NMU combined to total six penalties during the final three minutes, with Lakers MacVoy and Dan Barczuk taking double minors and Kyle Haines a game misconduct. LSSU ended the night 3-for-5 on the power-play while NMU was 1-for-8.

Mahoney-Wilson finished with 30 saves for LSSU, while NMU starting goaltender Brian Stewart totaled 33 saves through 50:12. Reid Ellingson allowed one goal and had six saves during the final 9:48.

LSSU and NMU meet in Game 2 of the series at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The annual Stuffed Toy Toss will take place when the Lakers score their first goal.
