NOTRE DAME, Ind.- Lake Superior State men’s ice hockey dropped the second of their two game series Saturday night in a battle of former Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals. The Lakers (0-6-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) are now winless in their past three trips to Compton Family Ice Arena.
Kevin Aldridge (0-1-0) made his first career start, turning away 27 shots in the effort. His counterpart, Cal Peterson (1-1-0), ended his night with 27 saves on 28 shots.
The Fighting Irish were able to convert an early score by Jake Evans, unassisted, 3:37 into the game. Mario Lucia, who scored a goal during the first game, notched a goal after the Steven Fogarty shot careened off of the back boards and out in front of the Lakers net. The Lakers would go into the locker rooms for intermission trailing in the shot category 12-11 and on the scoreboard 2-0.
The second period was all about the Lakers as they were able to score the frame’s loan goal on a beautiful give and go between Stephen Perfetto (2-0-2) and Mitchell Nardi (0-2-2), giving Perfetto his second goal of the series. Kyle Chatham was also credited with an assist giving him his first point as a Laker. The period ended with the Lakers leading in shots 21-19.
The Fighting Irish (2-2-0) extended their lead to 3-1 just 1:57 into the final frame when Lucia buried his second goal of the game to make the lead 3-1. Following an Austin Wuthrich goal to give the Irish a 4-1 lead, Lucia picked up a hat-trick-goal 1:15 later to put the game out of reach. The goal was Lucia’s fourth goal of the series.
The Lakers return home next weekend to face WCHA rivals Northern Michigan. The weekend will mark Great Lake State Weekend and the season opener of the battle for the Cappo Cup.
