Four Former Laker Hockey Players Invited to NHL Training Camps

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Lake Superior State men's hockey team is excited to share the news that four former Laker hockey players have been invited to National Hockey League training camps. Forwards Diego Cuglietta and Anthony Nellis, defenseman Steven Ruggiero and goaltender Nick Kossoff will be attending camps this month. 

Cuglietta will attend the Dallas Stars main training camp as well as the team's rookie training camp. Camp will open on Friday, Sept. 13 and include three days of on-ice sessions at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Cuglietta attended the Dallas Stars 2019 Development Camp in June 2019. 

The Kamloops, B.C. native signed an amateur tryout with the Texas Stars, Dallas' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, at the conclusion of the Lakers 2018-19 season. In his career at Lake State, Cuglietta tallied 50 goals and 50 assists in 147 career games. His 25 goals in his senior season led the NCAA while he set a personal career high in points (41). Cuglietta served as a team captain and a nominee for the 2019 Hobey Baker Award. 

Nellis will join Cuglietta at the Stars main training camp. The forward is currently under contract for the 2019-20 on an AHL deal with the Texas Stars. Following his senior season at Lake State, Nellis joined the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL. 

The Breakeyville, Que. native recorded 91 points (40G, 51A) in 148 career games with the Lakers. Nellis ranked second on the team in points (33) behind Cuglietta during the 2018-19 season. He recorded 91 points (40G, 51A) in 148 career games as a Laker. 

Ruggiero will attend the Anaheim Ducks rookie camp where he will compete in the Anaheim Rookie Faceoff Tournament at Great Park Ice in Irvine, Calif. The tournament will take place from Sept. 7-10 and feature the Ducks as well as five other NHL teams. Ruggiero signed an ameteur tryout agreement with the Ducks minor league affiliate, the San Diego Gulls, at the end of the 2018-19 Lake State season. The defenseman was selected in the sixth round (178th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Ducks.

The Kings Park, N.Y. native recorded 12 points (6G, 6A) in 54 career games with the Lakers after joining the team as a junior. Ruggiero set career highs in goals (6), assists (5), points (11) and plus-minus (+8) during his season season at LSSU.

Kossoff will attend the Chicago Blackhawks rookie camp where he will participate in the 2019 Prospect Tournament from Sept. 6-10  at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich. The tournament will include the Blackhawks and seven other NHL teams. Kossoff is one of three goalies on the roster and the only free-agent invite at the position. The former Laker netminder signed an amatuer tryout agreement with the ECHL's Manchester Monarchs following the 2018-19 season.

The West Des Moines, Iowa native holds a 27-30-5 record from his time at Lake State as well as a career .913 save percentage and a 2.69 goals against average. Kossoff holds the Lake State record for saves in a game after his 63 save appearance in a 3-3 tie at Denver on Oct. 20, 2017. Kossoff posted a 17-8-2 record during his senior season with a .918 save percentage and a 2.42 goals against average. 

The Lakers will open the 2019-20 season with a home series against non-conference opponent, Merrimack on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6 at Taffy Abel Arena. Saturday's game is set to start at 7:00 p.m while Sunday's game is slated for a 5:00 p.m. puck drop.
