SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—The Lake Superior State men's tennis team was edged by Northwood, 5-4, Wednesday afternoon in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener inside the Arbuckle Student Activities Center.
With the loss, LSSU slips to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in league competition. NU improves to 8-1, 1-0.
The Lakers came out strong in the doubles portion of the match taking 2-of-3 from the Timberwolves. Northwood gained the upper hand in singles, 4-2, to come away with the victory.
The senior-freshman duo of Ieuan Lister and Diego Penz won on a tie-breaker (9-8, 7-6). Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama also won on a tie-break (9-8,7-3).
Prima and Valderrama captured both wins for the Lakers in singles, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3.
Lake State will return to the court on Saturday (March 24) as they continue GLIAC competition at Grand Valley. LSSU is scheduled to take on Ferris State on Sunday.
