RENSSELEAR, Ind. - St. Joseph's held a slim lead throughout Sunday's non-conference women's basketball game and held on to beat Lake Superior State 69-63.
It was the season opener for the Lakers, while the Pumas improved to 1-1. LSSU plays another non-conference tilt at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Concordia in Ann Arbor, Mich.
St. Joseph's, which represents the Great Lakes Valley Conference, made 14-of-28 field goals in the first half to build a 39-31 halftime lead. The Pumas led by as many as 11 points, 46-35, in the second half. Newcomers Raven Trammell and Jasmine Brown hit three-pointers as LSSU responded with a 10-0 run to cut it to 46-45 with 12:43 remaining.
Although St. Joe regained an eight-point cushion, LSSU was within reach throughout the rest of the game. After Maria Blazejewski scored to make it 64-63 with 3:30 remaining, the Lakers missed three shots in a row, then committed three straight turnovers. The Lakers missed all five shots during the final three minutes.
Ronlea Peterson totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead LSSU. Brown finished with 11 points, and Nicole Marshall had 10 points and nine rebounds. Blazejewski and Cassy Schemberger totaled eight points each.
LSSU shot 40 percent from the field, including 6-of-23 from three-point range, and made 9-of-13 free throws. St. Joseph's shot 43.4 percent from the field, including 9-of-23 from behind the arc, and made 14-of-17 free throws.
The Pumas out-rebounded the Lakers, 24-38, and totaled 15 turnovers to LSSU's 19. Tatiana Ortiz led St. Joseph's with 25 points and three blocked shots.
