SAULT STE. MARIE - No. 20 Grand Valley State concluded its
four-game softball series against Lake Superior State with 8-4 and
9-1 wins Sunday at Gerrish Field.
GVSU (41-11 overall, 24-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference), which is ranked third in the Midwest Region, out-hit
LSSU 22-13 for the day and swept the series.
Grand Valley jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning
of the opener and extended the lead to 7-2 with three more runs in
the fifth. LSSU cut it to 8-4 with two runs in the sixth.
Haleigh Edgar was 3-for-4 with one RBI, and Alyssa Avila was
2-for-4 with one RBI to lead LSSU (8-29 overall, 5-25 GLIAC).
Amanda Maxon contributed one hit and two RBI. Lake State pitcher
Felicia Gingrich allowed eight runs on 10 hits, no strikeouts and
three walks through six innings. Six runs were earned. Reliever
Brandi Anderson gave up two hits and had one strikeout.
GVSU also led early in Game 2, scoring three runs in the first,
two in the second and three more in the third. Ali Lince, Heather
Cuthrell, Dani Reveley, Karrie Jaynes and Kirsten Thompson singled
for LSSU. Lake State pitcher Jillian Willette allowed eight runs on
eight hits, no strikeouts and one walk through three innings.
Anderson pitched in the fourth and allowed one run on two hits, no
strikeouts and one walk. Six GVSU runs were earned.
LSSU concludes its season with a home double-header Tuesday
against Ferris State. Game 1 begins at 3 p.m.
