SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's tennis team, under head coach Luke Ogren, closed out the weekend with an 8-1 loss in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play to Saginaw Valley State on October 1st at the Arbuckle Student Activities Center on the campus of Lake Superior State University.
The Lakers (1-6, 0-5 GLIAC) were swept in the doubles portion of play, as the tandem of junior Tara Harvey and senior Macarena Bielsa were defeated by Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin 8-6. Junior Allison Grandfield and freshman AlexiAnn Drouin suffered a similar fate, falling 8-1 to Danielle Slonak and Madeline Miller. Saginaw's Joanne Gao and Maya Campbell downed senior Laura Valderrama and junior Jenay Andrews by a score of 8-5.
Lake Superior got their lone win on the day when Drouin continued her impressive freshman campaign in the number one singles slot, defeating Donahue 6-2, 6-0.
The Cardinals (4-1, 4-0 GLIAC) were victorious in the remainder of play, as Harvey fell to Miller in number two singles, 7-6 (4), 6-2, and Gao downed Bielsa 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In number four singles, Valderrama was downed by McLaughlin 6-1 and 6-4, and Slonak defeated Grandfield 6-0 and 6-2 in the number five slot. Junior Kirsten Malpass fell to Campbell by the same score to finish the day.
The Lakers hit the road next weekend, as they visit Grand Valley State on October 7th and Ferris State the following day. Lake Superior returns home on Saturday, October 14 to face Purdue Northwest. Start time is 10 a.m. at the Student Activities Center.
