SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State volleyball has released its schedule for the 2019 season.
The schedule consists of 16 conference matches, 10 nonconference matches and one exhibition contest.
Lake Superior State hosts Alma College for an exhibition match on Sept. 3 inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
The Lakers begin their regular-season schedule with eight nonconference matches, commencing with the Keweenaw Volleyball Classic at Michigan Tech on Sept. 6 and Sept 7. During the classic, the Lakers will face four opponents from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, including Southwest Minnesota State, which finished the 2018 season ranked eighth in the AVCA NCAA Division II rankings.
Lake Superior State continues play against NSIC opponents as part of the GLIAC/NSIC Crossover, hosted by St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minnesota on Sept. 13-14. The Lakers will play four matches as part of the crossover, including a match against Minnesota Duluth, which finished last season ranked fifth in NCAA Division II. The Lakers will also face South Dakota Mines out of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
LSSU starts conference play against Ferris State, which finished last season ranked 14th in NCAA Division II, inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Sept. 20. The Lakers then face Northwood at home on Sept. 21, before wrapping up September with matches at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech on the 27th and 28th.
The Lakers begin October with a home match against Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 1. The Lakers then go on the road to face Ashland and Wayne State on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5, before returning home to face Parkside and Purdue Northwest on Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 as part of Great Lake State Weekend. LSSU then steps away from conference play for the Midwest Region Crossover on Oct. 18-19 in Indianapolis. Lake State concludes October with matches against Grand Valley State on the 25th and Davenport on the 26th.
Beginning November on the road, the Lakers play at Northwood, at Ferris State and at Saginaw Valley State on Nov. 1, Nov. 2 and Nov. 9, respectively. Lake Superior State then returns home for its final two regular-season matches – facing Michigan Tech on Nov. 15 and Northern Michigan for Senior Day on Nov. 16.
The GLIAC Tournament is scheduled to begin with the quarterfinals on Nov. 20, followed by the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals on Nov. 23 and the GLIAC Tournament Championship on Nov. 24.
LSSU volleyball is coming off a 2018 season that saw the Lakers win their most games since 2011-12 and play 13 five-set matches. The Lakers look to continue increasing their competitiveness on the court under third-year Head Coach Dave Schmidlin.
