Smith, Heimonen lead Lakers at GLIAC Cross Country Championships

MILFORD – Lake Superior State placed 13th in the men's 8K and 15th in the women's 6K at the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships held Saturday at Kensington Metro Park.

Garrett Smith placed 61st in 26:27.9 to lead the Lake Superior State men's team. Adam Birkeland was 72nd in 26:43.1, and was followed by Ryan Rogers, who was 73rd in 26:47.2. Paul Burke finished fourth for the Lakers and 77th overall in 26:55.8. Rounding out LSSU's top seven were Jack Miles, who was 81st in 27:12.9, Jacob Baker, who was 93rd in 27:35.6, and Parker Wyngaard, who was 98th in 28:02.5.

Lydia Heimonen placed 62nd in 24:27.2 to lead the LSSU women's squad. MacKenzie Kelley was 77nd in 25:08, and Trudie Mulville finished 82nd in 25:17.9.Hannah Passino was 87th with a time of 25:35, and McKenzie Richardson placed 88th in 25:44.7. Hailey Foster was 90th in 25:55, and Casey Shafer rounded out the field with a 95th-place finish in 26:25.7.

Grand Valley State swept the men's and women's team titles. Tiffin's James Ngandu won the men's race in 24:06.8, and Michigan Tech's Anna-Catharina Wilhelm took the women's championship in 25:20.6.
