Fedor Mironov claimed the first individual win of the season for Lake Superior State, taking the 100 yard Butterfly in 49.08 at the Davenport Invitational.
It stamped an exclamation point on a very good weekend for LSSU. The Lakers men's and women's teams set ten new program best marks on Friday and Saturday. Mironov also took third in the 50 yard freestyle, third in the 100 yard freestyle and fifth in the 100 yard backstroke.Â
"Fedor got us our team's first win of the year and demonstrated he can be a real factor on relays," said LSSU Head Coach Tim O'Neill.
The Lakers men's squad set a team record in the 400 yard Medley Relay, clocking in at 3:35.30. The 400 yard Freestyle Relay team also broke the school record at 3:17.23.
Hudson VanOstenberg's time of 2:04.89 in the 200 yard backstroke broke the Lakers best mark, and
Dimitrij Mijailovic set a new mark in the 200 yard Breaststroke at 2:15.84.
The women's team broke six school records over the weekend.
Andrea Ayuso Mendez swam a stellar race in the 200 yard Freestyle, narrowly missing the first individual win for a women's race in LSSU history. With a time of 1:56.94, she finished just .06 seconds behind Wayne State's Emily Hedley for the win. She also finished the 200 yard Individual Medley in 2:14.44, a program besttime.
She wasn't done there. Ayuso Mendez set school bests in the 100 yard Butterfly (1:00.73), 100 yard Freestyle (57.13)Â and 200 yard Butterfly (2:19.02).
Ivy Delo's finish of 1:15.30 in the 100 yard Backstroke also set a new team record.
O'Neill was ecstatic with his team's results and the improvement from the opening meet in Marquette. He said, "It's an impressive showing for us one week after a great start to the season. Now it's time to train before we return to Davenport with more confidence and a stronger resolve."
The Lakers next compete at the Don Kimble Invitational at Davenport in late November.
