SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State athletic department will be holding a "Thank You Mayor Tony" night during the hockey team's Saturday, Nov. 2 game against Ferris State in the Taffy Abel Arena. Anthony "Tony" Bosbous is the longest-serving mayor in Sault Ste. Marie history, and he will conclude his 18-year tenure on Monday, Nov. 4, 2019.
To honor Mayor Tony and all that he has done for our community, the Lakers will hold a special pregame tribute to him on the ice including a ceremonial puck drop. Bosbous will be a guest of LSSU President Dr. Rodney Hanley for the game. The Laker hockey game will be one of many events and appearances that will be held during the mayor's last week in office.
"Tony Bosbous has been a long time advocate for LSSU, consistently demonstrating his passion and support through years of service on various advisory boards, fund raising activities, and Laker hockey," stated Dr. Rodney Hanley, LSSU President. "We are thrilled to dedicate this night to the lasting impression that Mayor Bosbous has made on the LSSU community."
Mayor Bosbous, a Sault Ste. Marie native, is a 1973 graduate of Lake Superior State University and an avid supporter of Laker athletics. Upon graduating from Lake State, Bosbous started his career at the Community Action Agency, where he worked for 42 years before retiring. Bosbous' career in politics began in 1983 when he joined the Sault Area School Board of Education as a Trustee. "Mayor Tony" has served as mayor since April 2001 following a ten-year stint as the City Commissioner. Bosbous has been an involved community member as he has served on a variety of local boards and non-profit organizations. During this year's Great Lake State Weekend, Bosbous was named Recipient of the Lighthouse Recognition Award, which is given at the special discretion of LSSU's Alumni Awards selection committee for recognition of long time advocacy of Lake Superior State University.
Bosbous' connections to Lake State go well beyond his own time at the university as he has served on the board of the LSSU Foundation and is a founding member and past president of the Soo Blueliners. Mayor Tony and his wife, Margaret, are also the proud parents of Carrie and Jodi, who are both Lake State Alums. Bosbous has four grandchildren, Ryan, Piper, Tucker, and Emma, who is a sophomore at Lake State.
The series against Ferris State on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 will be the first weekend of conference play for the Lakers this season. Both games are set for a 7:07 p.m. start.
