SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State Athletics and the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula are hosting a "Light the Lamp for the United Way" event on Friday, Nov. 15 as part of the Lake Superior State vs. Michigan Tech hockey game at Taffy Abel Arena. Game time is 7:07 p.m.

This event will spotlight United Way of the EUP and the work they do to help the most vulnerable members of our Tri-County Area. New UWEUP gear and resource information will be available at each  information station. Stations will be located on the concourse of the arena where fans can learn more about the UWEUP partnerships, programs, and volunteer opportunities and there will be special announcements and presentations highlighting the UWEUP throughout the game.

"We greatly appreciate the partnership we've had with Lake Superior State University," says Raulaniesa Aranda, United Way of the EUP's CEO. "Lake State student athletes and coaches, as well as the Laker Athletics Department staff have been so supportive of our community over the years. Together, we continue to work toward meeting the needs of our most vulnerable citizens," she continues.

Light the Lamp for the United Way is part of an ongoing relationship between Laker Athletics and the United Way of the EUP. This year on Thursday, Nov. 21, Laker athletics will continue its participation in the annual Giving Thanks Mobile Food Pantry Distribution Project, in which holiday meals are prepared for more than 300 EUP families.

Additionally, Laker student-athletes, coaches and administration participate in Global Youth Services Day, Read United - a K-3rd grade Reading Buddies program where student-athletes visit local classrooms to read to students- and the Citizens Review Panel to help UWEUP steward donor dollars by reviewing grant applications and hearing agency presentations on how awards would be spent in the EUP.

"This event is special to our department as we are proud to partner with an organization like the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula," said Dr. David Paitson, Director of Athletics at Lake Superior State and a member of the UWEUP Board of Directors. "The United Way of the EUP does amazing work in our community and our involvement is among our most important initiatives."

Tickets to the game can be purchased online or by calling (906) 635-2601. United Way donors will receive a special group ticket discount offer via an email from the agency.
