SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State men's tennis student-athlete Diego Penz has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week, as announced by the Lake Superior State athletic department on Monday.
Penz, a sophomore from Hamburg, Germany who is majoring in Business Administration, became the first Laker to win a GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament match since the 2010-11 season when he defeated Ashland's Tche Kun Ten 6-4, 6-2 at No.5 singles during the fifth-place match of the 2019 GLIAC Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan.
The last Lake Superior State men's tennis player to win a GLIAC Tournament match was J. Gaberiel-Oliveira, who defeated Findlay's Josh Smedley 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on April 16, 2011 in Midland, Michigan.
It is the first time that Penz has been named the Madigan/Pingatore Insurance Athlete of the Week as an individual. He was also honored when the entire men's tennis team earned the award on April 2.
