Brendan Gross enters his third season as a student assistant coach with the Lake Superior State men’s basketball program during the 2025–26 season after joining the staff in 2023–24.
During his time on the bench, Gross has been part of one of the most successful stretches in recent program history. In his first season with the program in 2023–24, the Lakers finished 23–9 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Sweet Sixteen. That season featured multiple player honors including GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year Kingsley Perkins, who also earned First Team All-GLIAC and Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team recognition, while Tyson Edmondson was named First Team All-GLIAC. Andy Soma was named to the GLIAC Academic Excellence Team.
The 2024–25 season proved to be historic for the Lakers as the program finished 30–7 and captured the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship. Several Lakers earned major accolades including Hunter Soper, who was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-GLIAC, GLIAC All-Defensive Team, six GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week awards, the GLIAC Commissioner’s Award, and College Sports Communicators First Team Academic All-American honors. Tyson Edmondson was named Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player while also earning NABC First Team All-Midwest Region, D2CCA All-Midwest Region, and First Team All-GLIAC honors. Kingsley Perkins earned First Team All-GLIAC, All-GLIAC Defensive Team, Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team, and the program’s Chris Buell Award for Team Toughness. Devin Womack was also recognized as a Second Team All-GLIAC selection.
In 2025–26, the Lakers finished 19–12 and closed the season strong by winning 10 of their final 12 games after losing the top eight players from the previous season’s roster. Individual honors included Omar Suleiman earning First Team All-GLIAC recognition, Nino Carter-Smith taking Second Team All-GLIAC, and Karter Richards earning GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
Gross assists the coaching staff with scouting preparation, film breakdown, analytics, recruiting, and recruiting visits, while also contributing to player development and supporting the day-to-day operations of the program.
A native of Brimley, Michigan, Gross graduated from Brimley High School in 2024 before attending Lake Superior State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in sports marketing in December 2025.
