SAULT STE. MARIE - Sophomore goaltender Matt Violin totaled 31 saves, including 26 in the last two periods, to lead the Lake Superior State hockey team to a 2-0 victory and the Lakers' first shutout win since February, 2000.
Freshman forward Nathan Ward scored an unassisted goal off a turnover in Bowling Green's zone at 15:19 of the first period. Ward also assisted on Adrian Kremblewski's goal at 1:43 of the third. Alex Dunn drew the other assist on Kremblewski's goal.
Violin and the LSSU defense thwarted the Falcons' comeback attempt late in the third. While skating four-on-four, BGSU (7-21-3 overall, 4-18-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) pulled the goalie with 1:50 remaining, but couldn't score with the extra attacker.
Falcons goalie Tyler Masters (2-11-1) totaled 17 saves. Violin improved to 4-18-3.
Both teams finished 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Lakers (6-23-4 overall, 3-21-1 CCHA), who have won two of their last four games, play Bowling Green at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in their final home game of the season. LSSU senior captain Jeremy Bachusz will be honored during the annual Soo Blueliners Senior Night ceremony following the game.
