Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State won its second straight
hockey game against a nationally-ranked team by
beating 10th ranked Alaska, 4-3, Friday night at
the Taffy Abel Arena.
LSSU (6-6-1 overall, 3-5-1-0 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) started off strong, scoring two goals less then a
minute apart in the first period to lead the game, 2-0.
The Lakers' first goal came at 8:47 of the first from junior
forward Rick Schofield, who netted his first of two goals for the
night. It was assisted by freshman forward Ben Power and
junior forward Will Acton. The Lakers notched their second goal 43
seconds later at 9:30. Senior forward Brad Cooper scored his
fourth goal of the season, while freshman forward Domenic Monardo
and senior forward John Scrymgeour assisted.
UAF (7-3-1 overall, 4-3-0-0 CCHA) answered in the second,
scoring a power-play goal at 2:29. The Nanooks netted their second
goal to tie the game, 2-2, at 5:09. Alaska's Andy Taranto was
credited with a goal and an assist during the period.
The Lakers regained the lead 11 seconds later on an
unassisted goal by Schofield, who won a faceoff in front of
UAF netminder Scott Greenham and power the puck in the net. Senior
defenseman Simon Gysbers gave the Lakers a 4-2 lead at 8:01 of the
second. Gysbers' goal was a power-play marker from senior
forward Zac MacVoy and senior defenseman Steven Kaunisto.
The Nanooks came within one again at 13:42 of the third. Nik
Yaremchuk netted a power-play goal for his second goal of the
night.
The Lakers received a holding penalty with five seconds left in
regulation and Greenham pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Laker
sophomore forward Fred Cassiani won the faceoff against Taranto in
LSSU's zone and ran out the clock.
The Nanooks went 2-for-5 on the power play, while LSSU was
1-for-5.
LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson saved 26 shots and improved
to 6-5-1 overall. Greenham (7-3-1) stopped 20 shots.
The Nanooks haven't defeated the Lakers at Taffy Abel
Arena since 2004.
LSSU, which also upset 12th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 on
Nov. 14, snapped a three-game home-ice losing streak and
improved to 3-3 in one-goal games this season.
The Lakers will be home again tomorrow night to face off against
the Nanooks at 7:05 p.m.
