SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State out-shot Western Michigan
38-23 but came out on the short end of a 4-1 decision Saturday at
Taffy Abel Arena.
WMU (10-17-7 overall, 7-13-6-2 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) bounced back from Friday's 7-4 loss to split the
series and jump one point ahead of the Lakers (10-16-8 overall,
7-13-6-1) in the league standings. LSSU dropped into a 10th-place
tie with Michigan State and must sweep next weekend's series at
Northern Michigan to have a shot at home ice for the first round of
the CCHA Playoffs.
Bronco goaltender Riley Gill stopped 37 of 38 shots on goal and
had a shutout going until Laker Zac MacVoy scored at 17:08 of the
third period. Lake Superior State pulled goaltender Brian
Mahoney-Wilson in favor of an extra attacker when it
cut WMU's lead to 3-1. The Broncos answered with an empty-net
goal by Patrick Galivan at 19:01.
Chris Clackson and Galivan scored first-period goals for WMU,
and Clackson made it 3-0 with an unassisted power-play goal at
16:04 of the third period. The Broncos were 1-for-4 on the power
play and held LSSU scoreless on four power-play chances.
LSSU starting goalie Pat Inglis gave up two goals and was
replaced by Mahoney-Wilson at 15:27 of the first period. He totaled
five saves. Mahoney-Wilson totaled 14 saves and allowed one goal.
MacVoy had a goal in both games of the series for LSSU.
Lake Superior State concludes the regular season with a series
at Northern Michigan on Feb. 27-28. NMU and Ferris State are tied
for seventh place in the CCHA with 25 points, while WMU is ninth
with 22. LSSU and MSU have 21 points each, and Bowling Green is
12th with 17 points.
