Broncos come back to split series

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State out-shot Western Michigan 38-23 but came out on the short end of a 4-1 decision Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

WMU (10-17-7 overall, 7-13-6-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) bounced back from Friday's 7-4 loss to split the series and jump one point ahead of the Lakers (10-16-8 overall, 7-13-6-1) in the league standings. LSSU dropped into a 10th-place tie with Michigan State and must sweep next weekend's series at Northern Michigan to have a shot at home ice for the first round of the CCHA Playoffs.

Bronco goaltender Riley Gill stopped 37 of 38 shots on goal and had a shutout going until Laker Zac MacVoy scored at 17:08 of the third period. Lake Superior State pulled goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson in favor of an extra attacker when it cut WMU's lead to 3-1. The Broncos answered with an empty-net goal by Patrick Galivan at 19:01.

Chris Clackson and Galivan scored first-period goals for WMU, and Clackson made it 3-0 with an unassisted power-play goal at 16:04 of the third period. The Broncos were 1-for-4 on the power play and held LSSU scoreless on four power-play chances.

LSSU starting goalie Pat Inglis gave up two goals and was replaced by Mahoney-Wilson at 15:27 of the first period. He totaled five saves. Mahoney-Wilson totaled 14 saves and allowed one goal.

MacVoy had a goal in both games of the series for LSSU.

Lake Superior State concludes the regular season with a series at Northern Michigan on Feb. 27-28. NMU and Ferris State are tied for seventh place in the CCHA with 25 points, while WMU is ninth with 22. LSSU and MSU have 21 points each, and Bowling Green is 12th with 17 points.
