SAULT STE. MARIE - Eleventh-ranked Miami extended its unbeaten
streak to eight games by beating Lake Superior State 8-1 Friday at
Taffy Abel Arena.
The RedHawks (18-9-6 overall, 15-7-5-2 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association) handed the Lakers their first home loss in six
games.
Reilly Smith led Miami with two goals and an assist, while
Carter Camper and Justin Vaive scored two goals, and Trent
Vogelhuber had three assists. Chris Wideman, Andy Miele
and Pat Cannone tallied one goal each. Miele also had a
three-point night.
LSSU's Fred Cassiani spoiled the shutout with a goal at 16:25 of
the third period. Dan Radke had the only assist.
Miami goaltender Cody Reichard totaled 20 saves. LSSU starting
goaltender Kevin Kapalka allowed four goals and totaled 30 saves
through two periods. Back-up goalie Niels-Erik Ravn, making his
first CCHA appearance, allowed four goals and stopped seven shots
during the third period.
Miami was 2-for-4 on the power play, while LSSU finished
0-for-3.
LSSU (10-14-9 overall, 8-11-8-5 CCHA) and Miami play their
final regular-season game at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel
Arena. The Lakers will pay tribute to their seven seniors following
the game.
