LEBANON, Ill. - Lake Superior State concluded its spring break softball trip with a split at McKendree Thursday, bouncing back from a 4-3 loss with a 6-2 victory.
LSSU senior Brandi Anderson was 5-for-7 at the plate to lead the Lakers (7-7) for the day. She was 3-for-4 and recorded the pitching win during Game 2, while Carly Banchiu was 2-for-4 with a double. Emily Estep and Taylor Steinhelper also contributed two hits each.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Lakers rallied back with three runs in the top of the second inning and three more in the sixth. Anderson (4-1) went the distance to earn the mound victory, holding the Bearcats to two earned runs on six hits, one walk and no strikeouts.
Anderson hit a two-run single in the second inning that scored Kirsten Thompson, who also had an RBI.
Emily Estep and Katie Martin led off the sixth with singles. Estep scored on a single by Steinhelper. Banchiu added an RBI single, and Steinhelper scored on an error.
LSSU also fell behind early during the first game, trailing 3-0 until scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. The Lakers tied it, 3-3, on a solo home run by Anderson in the fifth.
McKendree (5-7) scored the winning run on a lead-off walk, sacrifice bunt and two-out single.
Anderson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs during Game 1, and Teryn Williams and Allison Traczyk had the Lakers' other two hits.
Riley Durbano (2-5) pitched a seven-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk in taking the loss.
LSSU begins Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition March 28 at Ohio Dominican.
