MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Lake Superior State men's and women's track & field team competed in its first meet of 2018 on Saturday taking part in the Northern Challenge at Northern Michigan University.
The Lakers claimed first place in five events and tallied a combined 13 top-three finishes on the afternoon.
Freshman David Mitter took first in the men's mile clocking a 4:30.27 finish. Mitter also posted a second-place finish 3000 meter run with a 9:12.42 time.
Junior Garrett Smith won the men's 5000 meter with a 16:21.57 finish. Teammates Zach Workman and Michael Gills finished 2nd and 3rd clocking a 17:06.27 and a 18:22.75.
Sophomore Roger Wilford took home the top mark in the men's high jump posting at 1.85m (6-0 3/4). Wilford also took first in the pole vault with a 4.5m (14-9) and second in the long jump with a 5.89m (19-4).
Junior thrower Cole VanOosten posted the top mark in the weight throw with a 15.3m (50-4). VanOsten also took third in the shot put with a 13.88m (45-6 1/2)
For the women's team, junior Lydia Heimonen took second-place in the 300 meter clocking a 11:37.20 time. Rebecca Lathrup took 2nd in the 800m with a 2:43.46.
Senior Sarah Swider took second-place in the high jump with a 1.48m (4-10 1/4) mark. Ashley Mullings took third place in the long jump with a 5.11m (16-9 1/4).
Sophomore thrower Sarah Ostwald took second-place in weight throw 11.21m (36-9 1/2) mark. Brittany Ryan took second-place in the shot put with a 9.97m (32-8 1/2) mark.
The Lakers will return to competition Feb.9 as they travel to Allendale, Mich., for the GVSU Big Meet.
