Laker Hockey Take Down the Red Leafs in an Exhibition

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) hockey team (1-3-0) defeated the Red Leafs of Simon Fraser (2-6-0) in an exhibition game by a final score of 6-4 on Saturday.

The Lakers opened up the scoring at the 6:54 mark of the opening period as Evan Bushy (Thief River Falls, Minn.) knocked the puck loose and Jared Westcott (Imperial, Mo.) scored off of his own rebound to give his team a 1-0 lead, but Nick Wicks answered to tie up the score a few minutes later. Dawson Tritt (Spokane, Wash.) put LSSU back in front at the 13:00 mark off of assists from Grant Hindman (Oakland, Mich.) and Connor Milburn (Kamloops, B.C.), but Simon Fraser would once again respond shortly thereafter with both teams entering the first intermission with the score tied at 2-2.

At the 8:55 mark of the second period, Joshua Wildauer (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) was able to get on the board with a score with assists from Sasha Teleguine (North Attleborough, Mass.) and Milburn. However, the Red Leafs answered with goals from Walker Erickson and Tristen Cross to take a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.

Both teams battled early in the third period, but nobody was able to get the puck into the net. However, Tritt was able to fire in the one-timer at the 12:17 mark to tie up the score at 4-4 after taking a pass from Nate Schweitzer (Champlin, Minn.) and Milburn notched his third assist on the day as well. Then, with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Cam Kungle (Red Deer, Alb.) would prove to be the winner after deflecting in the game winner off of a strike from his captain, Harrison Roy (Lakeville, Mass.) with Timo Bakos (Augsburg, Germany) also picking up an assist on the play. Bushy would then ice the game away with an empty-netter right off a Roy face-off to secure the 6-4 victory.

William Hakansson (Oskarshamn, Sweden) earned the win between the pipes after making 19 saves, and four different Lakers notched multiple points on the night, led by Milburn with three.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, Oct. 27 when they travel to upstate New York for a battle with Clarkson with the first puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
