Laker Track and Field Competes at SVSU Holiday Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) track and field program competed at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Classic on Friday to open the indoor season. 

Carter Oshelski (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.) completed the 200-meter run with respective times of 23.36 and 24.42 with Oshelski also placing 15th overall in the event.

Ryan O'Neill (Perry, Mich.) and Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) earned top-20 placements in the mile run with respective times of 4:38.76 and 4:42.99.

Ethan Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) completed the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:17.49.

The Lakers 4x400 squad A unit of Oshelski, O'Neill, A. Nachazel, and Sherman placed eighth in the relay after crossing the finish line at the 3:36.83, and their B-team of Sam Markle (Berrien Springs, Mich.), Riley Sponseller (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Gary Haight (Charlevoix, Mich.), and Skylar Williams (Battle Creek, Mich.) finished 12th with a time of 4:04.92.

Noah Murray (Macomb, Mich.) was able to clear 1.83m for an eighth place finish in the high jump while Riley Traver (Hartford, Mich.) cleared 1.78m to finish 12th. 

First year athletes Ethan Ring (Fair Haven, Mich.) and Brayden Heemer (Tawas, Mich.) went on to throw the shot put respective distances of 9.64m and 9.01m.

Sofia Salazar (Valle del Cauca, Columbia) and Katie Woodruff (Grand Rapids, Mich.) completed the 200-meter race with respective times of 28.95 and 31.23.

Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) went on to cross the finish line at the 1:07.62 mark in the 400-meter race.

Meanwhile, Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) and Olivia Peter (Cass City, Mich.) each had top-ten finishes in the women's mile with respective times of 5:47.34 and 5:56.42.

Keira Lamming (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) completed the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 10:73.

The Lakers squad A of Salazar, Lamming, Mosher, and Kapushinski earned an eighth place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:30.36 while the B squad of Julie Sheehy (Walkerville, Mich.), Peter, Sarah McDaniel (Manistique, Mich.), and Olivia Stevens (Grand Haven, Mich.) finished not far behind for ninth.

Ava Donmyer (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and Paige Johnson (Eckerman, Mich.) had the top marks for the Lakers in the women's shot put, throwing for respective distances of 9.79m and 9.29m.

Meanwhile, Janelle Docter (Howard City, Mich.) placed in the top-20 in the hammer throw, tossing for a top distance of 12.88m.

The Lakers return to action on Jan. 20 when they compete at the annual Jack Skoog Open at Central Michigan.
