Grant Wheaton medaled in the heptathlon, while Lake Superior State athletes set two new program records at the 2026 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend.
Wheaton placed third in the event, while taking first in the high jump and 60 Meter Hurdles portions of the multis. Senior
Avery Timm finished fourth in the heptathlon for LSSU as well. Lake Superior State Head Coach
Matt Stith praised the men who competed in the heptathlon and the women who competed in the pentathlon.
He said, "Between those four athletes, they scored 20 personal bests in their event disciplines in this one particular competition, which is just astonishing.Â
Grant Wheaton had the top overall result, finishing third in the heptathlon. So we have a medalist in that event for the second year in a row at GLIAC. But
Avery Timm was right behind him in fourth place, despite battling through multiple injuries just to compete.
Michael Featherstone was sixth, so that's just a tremendous showing in that event.
Keira Lamming, who was also working through a bit of a challenging injury situation, PR'd in every single discipline of the pentathlon, as well as obviously raising her personal best in the combined score, she finished in the top ten. So, terrific job by that multi-group. That was a real highlight for us."
The Men's and Women's Distance Medley Relay teams each set school records. The women's team, comprised of
Lilly Binger,
Clara Unnerud Wallhagen,
Madison Morgan, and
Izzy Yeoman finished in 12:42.48 broke LSSU's best mark - set by last year's team at the GLIAC Indoor Championships.
"It was really exciting to turn around and break it again this year at the same meet with two of the same athletes," said Laker Head Coach
Matt Stith. He said it was notable that this year's relay team featured two first-year runners and two sophomores.
"We're just scratching the surface, building the depth of our team in a way that we haven't seen for a long time, so that's very exciting for us."
The men's relay team of
Gavin Guggemos,
Max Ward,
Shane Izzard, and
Alex Tyndall set a new best time at 10:15.57. Stith pointed out, "Again, it's two freshmen and two sophomores, and the guys ran extraordinarily well. Every leg was at the very top end of what we had thought was going to be possible.
"It was terrifically executed. Each one was just fiercly competitive and used the opportunity of running against really fast teams to elevate our performance."
Laker athletes set 30 new personal records at the GLIAC Indoor Championships. Stith said, "Any time you come back with about the same number of PRs as you had athletes competing, you know you had a really great performance overall."
The team now shifts to the Outdoor Track and Field season, with its first meet at the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open on March 28th.
Reflecting on the team's performance at the final meet of the indoor season, Stith said, "We continued to show steady improvement year over year, not just in our scores and results, but also just the general level of competitiveness of our athletes within the context of the GLIAC."
He added, "We're just scratching the surface, building the depth of our team in a way that we haven't seen for a long time. That's very exciting for us."
