Two quality teams stood toe-to-toe at Taffy Abel Arena this weekend, as Lake Superior State split with Penn State in ACHA Women's Division I Hockey play.
The Lakers (5-3) took a 4-1 win on Saturday night, before losing 6-4 on Sunday to Penn State (2-3-0-1).
Lindsey Tonello continued her strong start to the campaign with a goal and an assist for LSSU in Saturday's win. She also scored in the closing seconds of Sunday's game, cutting the final margin down. She's into double digits now, with 10 goals from eight games for Lake Superior State. Her goal early in the third period gave the Lakers breathing room, and
Courtney McCoy locked down the game with the Lakers' fourth late in the frame.Â
On Sunday, LSSUÂ outshot Penn State 42-29, but couldn't strike with the same efficiency as the night before. Penn State got superb goaltending throughout the game, with a couple of big saves late in the third. Tonello's goal with under a second remaining pushed the score to 6-4. The Lakers spent much of the game playing from behind.
The loss ended a three-game winning streak, where the Lakers beat Penn State on Saturday and demolished Aquinas College twice at the beginning of the month. The Lakers next host Adrian College in early November. Fans get in to see all LSSU ACHA hockey home games for free at Taffy Abel Arena.
