Lake Superior State volleyball's home schedule drew to a close in a straight sets defeat to Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers (1-20, 1-13 GLIAC) were beaten 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium in front of another strong crowd.
Morgan Deming scored a trio of kills early in the opening set before GVSU(17-7, 11-3 GLIAC) went on a mid-set run.
Caitlyn Matelski hammered two kills home during the set for LSSU. Matelski and Deming each finished with eight kills in the match.
LSSUÂ took an early lead in the second, with a pair of kills from
Rachel Steele. Deming dominated with another three kills in the middle of the set, but GVSU picked up four straight points to grab a slim lead and never let it go. Matelski and
Elisa Rizzoli scored key kills to keep the Lakers in it late, but Grand Valley retained the lead and clinched the set.
In the third, GVSU went on an early run to grab a lead before LSSU found its footing.
Vanessa Swerdon's play cut the lead to 15-14, dealing three assists and a service ace in a five point LSSU run. Though the Lakers got a pair of kills from Rizzoli, Grand Valley pulled away late in the set to clinch the victory.
The Lakers wrapped the home portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon. On Friday, they celebrated their four seniors before the match with Wayne State.
