Omar Suleiman's excellent start to the season continued with big games against #9 Gannon and Lawrence Tech this week. And those outings earned him GLIAC Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday.
Suleiman scored 19 points on Wednesday in Flint, MI at Mott Community College against the 9th ranked Golden Knights. He hit 11 of his 13 free throws, consistently attacking the defense and drawing fouls. He drew a shooting foul early in the second half on a three-pointer, then converted all three foul shots to put the Lakers ahead. The play erased what had been a 12 point Gannon lead late in the first half. Suleiman also snagged six rebounds, doled out three assists, blocked a shot and nabbed two steals in 32 minutes. His efforts went a long way in securing a massive win for the Lakers.
On Saturday, LSSU honored the 2024-25 team that won a regional championship at the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament and qualified for the Elite Eight with a ring and banner ceremony. Then Suleiman put on a show as the Lakers dominated Lawrence Tech 93-56 in Lake Superior State's home opener. In 22 minutes, Suleiman scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-8 three-pointers. He grabbed three rebounds, with four assists and a steal.
The redshirt sophomore from Canton, MI continues to produce dominant performances early in the 2025-26 campaign. Since the first game of the season on November 14th against Lake Erie, Suleiman is third in the league in points per game (21.5), first in three-pointers made (18), third in free-throws made (31), fifth in field goal percentage (49.4%), and first in three-point field goal percentage (42.9%) among qualifiers. Of qualified shooters, he's shooting at an 8.2% clip higher than the next-best three-point shooter.
The Lakers hit the road Thursday, as the head to Grand Valley State to open GLIAC play. Then they face Davenport on Saturday before returning home December 15th. That will be a women's and men's basketball doubleheader. The Laker Women's Basketball team opens the day with a 1:00 PM tipoff against Walsh University, followed by Men's Basketball against Rochester Christian at 3:00 PM.
