Lake Superior State beat Grand Valley State in thrilling fashion Friday night, earning a 6-5 win on a pair of late third period goals.
Down 5-4 with minutes remaining in regulation, LSSU (8-6) tied the game through
Courtney McCoy, who scored unassisted at 16:00 of the third. Minutes later, the Lakers earned the game winner.
Kennedi Johnson struck at 18:56 to complete the comeback.
GVSU (4-11) scored twice in the opening 3:13 to open the back-and-forth contest. But
Brooke Brazeau struck at 3:43 as the score-a-thon continued, and
Lindsey Tonello leveled the game at 7:18.
Sophie Gibbs scored on either side of the first intermission to put LSSU in front.
But GVSU countered hard, scoring three goals in the closing minutes of the second period to take a 5-4 lead, which looked like it might hold up. That's when McCoy and Johnson answered the call for Lake State, and the Lakers took their third straight win.
On Saturday, GVSU won 3-2. An early goal at 1:55 by Maddie Miller put the visitors in front, and they never relinquished the lead. But Lake Superior State rallied in the third again.
Sarah Lamb scored at 4:52 of the the third, and
Chloe Boyko added another at 10:18. Though the Lakers kept up a torrid pace to close the game, they couldn't complete the heroics on consecutive nights.
LSSU next competes on January 16th, on the road at Arizona State. The Lakers won't see home ice again until February 14th against Sault College, though the Lakers played their first ten games of the season at Abel Arena.
