Laker Men's Tennis Earn Pair of Road Wins Over the Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's tennis team earned a pair of wins on the weekend over Northwood and Hillsdale to improve their record to 3-0 on the season.

Northwood

The Northwood Timberwolves started off strong in doubles, taking the No. 2 spot, but the Lakers fought back. Maxence Hamon (Montreal, Que.) and Haitam Aboufirassi (Montreal, Que.) teamed up for a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot, and the duo of Driss Sedrati (Casablanca, Morocco) and Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) outlasted NU's Max Wild and Finn Buschmaas at the top of the doubles lineup to secure the doubles point in a tiebreaker.

In singles play, Fraile extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spots. Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) would then push the Timberwolves to the brink after closing out a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 4 singles match.

Hamon added one more victory to the day to push his team over the edge with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 5 spot to clinch the match with a final team score of 4-3.

Hillsdale

The Hillsdale Chargers opened up the day by taking the top-seeded doubles match to put the pressure on LSSU, but the Lakers remained calm, taking the remaining two matches to secure the early 1-0 lead in the match. Andrei and Velasco claimed a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot, and the duo of Hamon and Aboufirassi clinched the doubles point in a 7-3 tiebreaker after winning the last four-consecutive points.

The Lakers would then pick up singles wins from Sedrati and Velasco in the middle of the lineup to push the Chargers to the brink. Then, Andrei closed out a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top of the order to secure the match for his team. The Chargers were able to make the final score close, closing it to only a 4-3 margin after winning super-tiebreakers at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots, but the Lakers improved to 3-0 on the season regardless.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to the PTR Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C. with their first match of the event scheduled for Sunday, March 2 at 3:00 p.m. against Tiffin.
