Lake Superior State beat rival Northern Michigan 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, then 2-1 in regulation on Sunday, taking a significant lead in the Cappo Cup series while earning five key CCHA points.
The accolades have followed for Laker goaltender
Rorke Applebee, who was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week by the league on Monday afternoon.
"Great goaltending all weekend long," Laker head coach
Damon Whitten told 99.5 YES FM after Sunday's win. "We love our guy,
Rorke Applebee. He's been so consistent and at the top of his game."
Applebee dealt with a lot of pucks this weekend, making 29 saves in Saturday's win and 43 on Sunday. He faced 13 or more shots in four of the six full periods played and put on a show for the home fans. His calm, composed demeanor in goal provided steadiness on the back end for the Lakers, and he was ready for several spectacular stops as well.
This season, Applebee is 12th nationally among goaltenders with 10 or more games played with a .924 save percentage. Sunday's contest was his fourth game with 40 or more saves during the campaign.
The Lakers next compete on January 16th at Bowling Green. LSSU hosts the Superior Ice Showdown at GFL Memorial Gardens in Sault Sainte Marie, ON on January 23rd against St. Thomas. Buy your tickets online, at the GFL Memorial Gardens box office or at the Norris Center box office for the Lakers' historic second trip across the St. Mary's River.
