ACHA Men’s Hockey: Two Lakers Score Hat Tricks as Lakers Roll Falcons in Weekend Sweep

What's better than a weekend sweep with a hat trick?

A weekend sweep with two hat tricks.

Freshman Max Wright and Senior Blaine Dorion both tallied hat tricks on Saturday as Lake Superior State defeated the Bowling Green Falcons, 7-2. The Lakers (6-1) beat the Falcons (0-8)  3-2 on Friday night. Both games took place at St. Ignace, MI's Little Bear Arena.

Dorion logged the opening goal of Saturday's game, then struck for the final two of the contest. Known primarily for his distribution, he set himself up with his movement and put himself in great positions to score.

"Blaine is known as a passer," said Laker Head Coach Steven Kaunisto." And every time he puts himself in really good spots to shoot the puck and he was able to do that today and find the back of the net."

Kaunisto also praised freshman Max Wright's play to start the season.

"Max is a guy that has come out of juniors and had some success," said Kaunisto. "Obviously he's growing and his confidence is growing." Wright logged a goal in each period of Saturday's win.

"Both of them have been playing really well," stated Kaunisto.

Friday, Luke Vega, Michael Willemsen, and Charlie Sullivan all tallied solo goals in the victory. Kaunisto noted how nice it was to have Sullivan back for his first in-season action of the year.

"He did really well for us," praised Kaunisto. "After missing the first few weekends. It didn't look like he missed any games at all."

Freshman Ethan Fitzgerald got the nod at goalie on Friday and totaled 28 saves for the night.

Lake Superior State continued their excellent start to the season, winning six of their first seven games. The Lakers blew out Wittenberg three times and knocked off Trine in the season opener.

"This is definitely a great start for us," said Kaunisto. "Its a good start to our season this is kind of what I was hoping for going into next weekend when we have Schoolcraft who will probably be top 1-3 in our region."

Next weekend, LSSU travels to Farmington Hills, MI to face Schoolcraft. Puck drop is set for 8 PM on Friday, October 23rd. Then on Saturday the 24th, opening faceoff is set for 5:15 PM.  Follow the team all season long on the new Lake Superior State Lakers app, now available on the App Store and Google Play.
