SAULT STE. MARIE - No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State defeated Lake Superior State, 78-62, on Saturday in what was LSSU's home opener and GVSU's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
Tim VanOudheusden made 11-of-17 field-goal attempts and scored a career-high 24 points to lead Lake State (0-6 overall, 0-2 GLIAC). Scott Perkins and Ryan Kuhl added 10 points each.
VanOudheusden also led the Lakers in rebounds with seven and had two steals.
Jason Jamerson led GVSU (8-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) with 23 points, while Pete Trammell followed with 17.
Grand Valley State led 47-29 at halftime. LSSU cut the deficit to 14 points, 52-38, with 15:28 remaining, and GVSU answered with a 7-0 run and regain its 20-point lead.
GVSU shot 51.9 percent from the field and made 14-of-24 free throws. LSSU shot 44 percent from the field and was 9-of-11 at the line. Grand Valley State out-rebounded Lake State, 34-29.
LSSU plays host to Gannon at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
