DULUTH, Minn. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team made a key run during the final two minutes of overtime to beat Minnesota-Duluth 63-60 in a non-conference game Friday.
LSSU (4-6) led 32-27 at halftime, but UMD (2-10) came back to tie it, 39-39, with 10:34 remaining in regulation. The final nine and one-half minutes included seven lead changes. Laker freshman Emily Joseph made two free throws with one second left to even the score, 53-53, and send the game into overtime.
After Minnesota-Duluth took a four-point lead during the opening 2:44 of overtime, LSSU answered by scoring eight straight points. Junior Jackie Armstrong, who led the Lakers with 21 points, ignited the run with a lay-up on an assist by Shalyn Beauchamp. Senior Danielle Makins hit a jumper to tie it, 58-58, with 53 seconds remaining.
Armstrong gave LSSU a 60-58 lead with another lay-up at 00:21, and Beauchamp iced the Laker win by sinking two free throws with six seconds to go. Joseph made one of two free throws during the last second of overtime.
Armstrong turned in her second straight 20-point performance and had seven rebounds. Joseph scored 14 points, and Alyssa Vanderwal had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
Beauchamp led in rebounds with nine, and contributed five assists and five steals. Makins added seven boards as the Lakers out-rebounded UMD, 51-33. LSSU shot 37.9 percent from the field and made 15-of-18 free throws.
Katy Freeman led UMD with 21 points. The Bulldogs shot 33.9 percent from the field and were 16-of-25 at the line.
The Lakers continue their Minnesota trip with a game at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday at St. Cloud State.
