Once the final horn sounded, a packed crowd at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, MI rose to respect Lake Superior State's senior basketball stars.
One of LSSU's all-time greats,
Grace Bradford, received a rousing ovation as she was honored with her family, including her sister
Maddie Bradford, a Laker junior. Grace recently broke Lake Superior State's all-time rebounding record, a marker that had stood for 43 years. She's also scored more than 1,000 points in her LSSU career. Fans in attendance recognized that they've had the honor of watching greatness during the course of her career, and showed their appreciation for her incredible college basketball career.
"She left a legacy," said Laker Head Coach
Grace Howrigon. "It's really special that everybody gave her as much love as they did. Everybody knows who
Grace Bradford is, and everybody will for the rest of time at Lake State."
Nevaeh Cyr, the Lakers' student manager, was also honored for Senior Day. A staple of the program during her time at LSSU, Cyr has diligently worked as a key member of the LSSU staff. A native of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Canada, Cyr was recognized for her quality tenure as team manager.
"Nevaeh is incredible," said Howrigon. "She means a lot to this program. She does all the little things behind the scenes that make this engine go. Our team gave both Grace and Nevaeh a ton of love in the locker room, and it's very well deserved."
The Lakers (7-19, 4-14 GLIAC) lost the game 87-40 to #3 GVSU (25-1, 17-1 GLIAC), the defending National Champions. Bradford registered her 13th double-double of the season, tied for 13th nationally at the NCAA Division II level. She scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and stole the ball three times. She also passed for an assist.
It's the kind of production LSSU has been able to write in pen during her time in the Soo. Bradford averages 13.6 points and 9.9 rebounds per game over the course of her career, starting every game but one - back in her first season.
Bradford,
Lara Aguzzi and
Clare Conzelmann each hit threes for Lake State.
Howrigon reflected after the game on the two seniors that were honored on Saturday. "The impact they had in the locker room and our culture. Both of them show up every day, and you know what you're going to get. I tell the team all the time, it's about consistency. You don't want too high, too low, you want to be rock solid. The two of them have been instrumental parts of our culture."
LSSU hits the road for the final two contests of the regular season. The Lakers play Wayne State on Thursday, then travel to Purdue Northwest on Saturday. Watch each game on FloCollege, the official home of the GLIAC.
