SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State finished
0-1-1 in the Superior Cup for the second straight year after
following Friday's 2-2 tie against Minnesota-Duluth with
a 3-2 home loss to Michigan Tech on Saturday.
Short-handed goals by Michigan Tech's Malcolm Gwilliam at
1:59 of the second period and 15:01 of the third period proved to
be the difference makers. LSSU finished 0-for-9 on the power play,
while MTU was 1-for-8.
Gwilliam's goal broke a scoreless tie early in the second
period, but Laker junior Zac MacVoy answered with a 4-on-4
goal 42 seconds later.
Michigan Tech (1-1-0) took a 2-1 lead on a power-play goal by
Alex MacLeod at 2:35 of the third period.
LSSU sophomore Dillin Stonehouse netted a slapshot from the
point, tying the game 2-2 at 9:58 of the third period. The
unassisted marker was his first collegiate goal.
Stonehouse also assisted on MacVoy's goal, while Will Acton
drew the other assist.
Baker tallied the game-winner at 15:01. Drew Dobson assisted on
all three MTU goals.
LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 34 saves, including
18 in the third period. MTU netminder Josh Robinson had 25 saves.
During last year's inaugural Superior Cup, LSSU had nearly an
identical finish, tying at UM-D, 2-2, and losing at Michigan Tech,
3-2.
UM-D claimed this year's Superior Cup title by
beating Northern Michigan 5-0 on Saturday and finishing 1-0-1.
The Bulldogs also won Friday's overtime shootout.
LSSU travels to Ohio State on Oct. 17-18 for its Central
Collegiate Hockey Association debut.
