INDIANAPOLIS - The Lake Superior State
volleyball team snapped a six-match losing skid by beating Missouri
S&T, 3-1, Friday during its opening match at the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference v. Great Lakes Valley
Conference Crossover Volleyball Tournament at the Team Indiana
complex.
The Lakers (4-13) defeated Missouri S&T, 21-25, 25-16,
25-19, 25-22, and lost a five-set match to Quincy later in the
afternoon, 26-24, 22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-7.
LSSU junior Ali Jones tied her career high for most kills in a
match by totaling 20 kills against Missouri S&T (6-19). Her
well-rounded effort included 11 digs and four solo blocks, and a
season-high attack percentage of .295.
Ashley Purvis (pictured left with Jones) totaled a season-high
39 assists, and Brittany Newberry had 22 digs. LSSU mustered
an impressive attack percentage of .278 during Set 3 and .250
during Set 4. The Lakers also totaled 12 team blocks.
Sara Hess led LSSU with 17 kills, and Jones and Jessica Ewer had
15 each against Quincy. Newberry totaled a season-high 35 digs,
while Jones added 14 and Trisha Dutton 10. Purvis and Janelle
Balkwill both had 25 assists.
After losing Set 1 against Quincy, LSSU rallied back with 18
kills and a team attack percentage of .310 during Set 2. The Lakers
were also strong at the net during Set 3, but were held to a .070
attack rate during Set 4. Quincy had no attack errors during the
fifth set.
LSSU continues crossover play Saturday with matches against
Wisconsin-Parkside and Kentucky Wesleyan.
