SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State
struggled early on, but spread its attack and challenged Michigan
Tech during Sets 3 and 4 of Saturday's four-set volleyball match at
Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
After losing the first two sets, the Lakers (6-15 overall, 2-11
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) dominated the
third set and played a close fourth, combining for a .358 attack
percentage during those two games. Michigan Tech (16-8 overall,
10-3 GLIAC) pulled away from a 15-15 tie during the final set and
went on to win the match, 25-21, 25-12, 16-25, 25-20.
Brishia Stroven led the LSSU with 14 kills and a .522 attack
percentage. She had only two attack errors in 23 attempts.
Sara Hess added 11 kills, and Samantha Gibbs followed with eight
kills and a .312 attack percentage.
Janelle Balkwill totaled 22 assists, and Ashley Purvis had 13.
Hess, Ali Jones and Trisha Dutton had two aces each. Brittany
Newberry led the Lakers in digs with 18, followed by Dutton with 10
and Jones with seven.
Kelly Jorgensen led MTU with 12 kills, two solo blocks and four
block assists. MTU totaled 14 team blocks.
The Lakers play at Ferris State at noon on Friday, Oct. 31.
