SAULT STE. MARIE - Nebraska-Omaha pulled off its second straight
one-goal victory to sweep Lake Superior State in a Central
Collegiate Hockey Association series.
The Mavs (11-4-3 overall, 7-4-3-2 CCHA) are alone in third place
in the league standings following Saturday's 2-1 win at Taffy Abel
Arena. LSSU (4-8-6 overall, 3-6-5-1 CCHA) extended its winless
streak to seven games.
Lake Superior State totaled a season-high 48 shots on goal, but
UNO senior goaltender Jerad Kaufmann (7-1-1) answered a
season-high 47 saves. He made several impressive saves, especially
in the opening period as he faced 20 shots on goal. Kaufmann, who
went into the series with a career goals-against average of 1.61
against LSSU, missed his career high in saves by two.
UNO's Dan Charleston broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal at
8:16 of the second period. It was his second goal of the series.
Freshman Fred Cassiani scored LSSU's lone goal at 3:19 of
the third period -- two seconds after a Laker power play had ended
-- to tie the score, 1-1. It was his second goal of the series
and seventh goal of the season.. Rookie defenseman Kyle Haines
notched his first collegiate assist.
The CCHA's top-scoring defenseman, Eddie Del Grosso, tipped in
the game-winning goal at 9:13 of the third period.
LSSU junior goaltender Pat Inglis made his first appearance
since suffering an ankle injury at Ferris State on Nov. 1.
He stoppped 19 of 21 shots on goal.
Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play.
LSSU will play non-conference opponents during its next two
series. The Lakers take on Harvard on Dec. 27 at the Badger
Showdown. Alabama-Huntsville and host Wisconsin will also compete
in the tournament.
