Mavs nab another one-goal victory

SAULT STE. MARIE - Nebraska-Omaha pulled off its second straight one-goal victory to sweep Lake Superior State in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.

The Mavs (11-4-3 overall, 7-4-3-2 CCHA) are alone in third place in the league standings following Saturday's 2-1 win at Taffy Abel Arena. LSSU (4-8-6 overall, 3-6-5-1 CCHA) extended its winless streak to seven games.

Lake Superior State totaled a season-high 48 shots on goal, but UNO senior goaltender Jerad Kaufmann (7-1-1) answered a season-high 47 saves. He made several impressive saves, especially in the opening period as he faced 20 shots on goal. Kaufmann, who went into the series with a career goals-against average of 1.61 against LSSU, missed his career high in saves by two.

UNO's Dan Charleston broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal at 8:16 of the second period. It was his second goal of the series.

Freshman Fred Cassiani scored LSSU's lone goal at 3:19 of the third period -- two seconds after a Laker power play had ended -- to tie the score, 1-1. It was his second goal of the series and seventh goal of the season.. Rookie defenseman Kyle Haines notched his first collegiate assist.

The CCHA's top-scoring defenseman, Eddie Del Grosso, tipped in the game-winning goal at 9:13 of the third period.

LSSU junior goaltender Pat Inglis made his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury at Ferris State on Nov. 1. He stoppped 19 of 21 shots on goal.

Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play.

LSSU will play non-conference opponents during its next two series. The Lakers take on Harvard on Dec. 27 at the Badger Showdown. Alabama-Huntsville and host Wisconsin will also compete in the tournament.
