Bulldogs hit triple digits against Lakers

BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State shot over 60 percent from the field for the second time this season to defeat the Lake Superior State women's basketball team 104-78 Saturday.

The loss knocked LSSU (10-14 overall, 6-10 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) out of the post-season picture. Despite a loss to Wayne State, Grand Valley State clinched the fourth spot in the GLIAC North Division. Michigan Tech, Northwood and Ferris State currently own the top three positions.

Ferris State (16-9 overall, 11-5 GLIAC) controlled the game from start to finish, building a 58-34 halftime lead and continuing to shoot well during the second half. The Bulldogs shot 61.8 percent from the field (34-55) and 57.9 percent (11-19) from three-point range for the game. They were 5-of-7 from behind the arc in the second half.

Becci Houdek led Ferris State with 15 points, and Rachel Folcik followed with 14. Jenna Guay totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs out-rebounded LSSU, 42-29.

Alyssa VanderWal led Lake Superior State with 14 points, and Shalyn Beauchamp followed with 13. Katherine LaPrairie totaled 11 points, and Jaclyn Armstrong had 10.

LSSU shot 38.5 percent from the field, including 4-of-22 from three-point range. The Lakers made 24-of-34 free throws, while the Bulldogs were 25-of-31.

LSSU plays at 11 a.m. at Northern Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 23.
