OMAHA, Neb. - After getting out-shot 18-7 and falling behind 2-0
during the first period of Friday's loss, the Lake Superior State
hockey team set the tone early in front of 5,773 fans Saturday
at the Qwest Center.
LSSU's Rick Schofield scored 59 seconds into Game 2 of the
series, and teammate Will Acton made it 2-0 at 4:48. The Lakers
went on to win 3-1, snap a six-game winless skid and split a
Central Collegiate Hockey Association series for the second time
this season.
Zach Trotman recorded his first collegiate assist, and Acton had
the other helper on Schofield's goal. Schofield and Ben Power were
credited with assists on Acton's goal. The Lakers (5-6-1 overall,
2-5-1-0 CCHA) narrowly out-shot the Mavericks in the opening
period, 9-8.
Rookie Domenic Monardo extended LSSU's lead to 3-0 with a goal
at 19:01 of the second period. Brad Cooper and John Scrymgeour
garnered the assists.
Terry Broadhust scored UNO's lone goal at 2:13 of the third
period. The Mavericks (5-2-3 overall, 2-2-2-1 CCHA) pulled
goaltender Jeremie Dupont in favor of an extra attacker for more
than three minutes and out-shot LSSU 18-7 in the third period, but
failed to close in on the Lakers.
Dupont finished with 23 saves, while LSSU goaltender Brian
Mahoney-Wilson totaled 30 saves. Both teams were 0-for-4 on the
power play.
LSSU returns to Sault Ste. Marie and plays host to Alaska on
Nov. 21-22.
