Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State slowed a fast-paced
Findlay men's basketball team just enough to win Saturday's
contest, 61-55, and beat the Oilers for the second time in school
history.
LSSU (3-3 overall, 2-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) improved to 2-13 all-time against defending national
champion Findlay (3-3 overall, 0-2 GLIAC).
Senior Scott Perkins totaled 24 points and four rebounds to lead
the Lakers for the game and average 31 points per game
for the week. Teammate Kyle Hunt and Perkins were a combined
15-of-19 at the free-throw line for the game, including 14-of-17 in
the second half. Hunt finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and
four assists. Freshman Derek Kinney totaled 11 points and eight
rebounds.
Kinney scored nine points and Perkins eight as LSSU led 26-22 at
halftime.
Perkins made a three-pointer with 5:54 remaining, and Hunt sank
two free throws at 5:24 to give LSSU its biggest lead of the
game, 53-42. Findlay cut it to two points, 57-55, with 13
seconds remaining, but never had a chance to go ahead.
LSSU shot 36.7 percent from the field, including 9-of-26 from
three-point range. The Lakers made 16-of-24 free throws.
Findlay shot 44.9 percent from the field, including 3-of-11 from
behind the arc. The Oilers were 8-of-14 at the free-throw line, and
out-rebounded LSSU, 36-31. They committed 10 turnovers to LSSU's
eight.
Marcus Parker, who fouled out with five seconds
remaining, led Findlay with 13 points. Parker is the
GLIAC Pre-Season Player of the Year. Aaron Robinson added nine
points and six rebounds.
LSSU plays a non-conference game against Northland Baptist at 7
p.m. Tuesday.
