Armstrong nets career high against Tiffin

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State senior Jaclyn Armstrong netted a career-high 30 points during Thursday's 77-65 loss to Tiffin.

Armstrong, who is the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's No. 2 scorer, out-did her previous career best of 27 points, which she scored against the same opponent in December. She was 13-of-18 from the field and 4-of-7 at the free-throw line in the rematch.

Emily Joseph and Alyssa VanderWal scored 14 points each as three players reached double figures for LSSU (14-11 overall, 7-10 GLIAC), but the Lakers were out-scored from behind the arc, 30-12.

Tiffin (6-16 overall, 5-12 GLIAC) was led by Kylene Spiegel, who was 4-of-6 from three-point range and totaled 23 points. Teammate Holly Focke was 2-for-3 from long range and had nine points.

The Dragons, making their first appearance in Bud Cooper Gymnasium, made 10-of-23 three-pointers, while LSSU was 4-of-16. Overall, the Lakers had the better shooting night, making 50 percent from the field. Tiffin shot 47.4 percent and out-rebounded LSSU, 32-28.

Nicole Marshall and VanderWal totaled seven rebounds each, and Ronlea Peterson had six for the Lakers.

Focke and Leanne Lucius made back-to-back three-pointers to bring Tiffin back from a nine-point deficit in the first half. The Dragons led 36-33 at halftime and never trailed in the second half. LSSU cut the lead to two points on six occasions. The Lakers trailed by seven points, 70-63, with 1:11 to go.

LSSU will join the GLIAC Pink Wave when it plays host to Ashland at 1 p.m. Saturday.
