SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan
were even in kills, but the Wildcats' superior serving and fewer
errors made the difference in a four-set Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday at
Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
NMU (5-5 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) totaled 16 service aces en route to
a 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-17 win. Both teams totaled 42 kills.
LSSU freshman Nikki Stratelak had 12 kills to lead the
Lakers (0-10 overall, 0-2 GLIAC). Fellow freshman Loran Stenzel
added six kills. The two Laker rookies combined for an impressive
attack rate of .220. Senior Sara Hess and sophomore Abby
Shereda contributed nine kills each.
Laker setter Janelle Balkwill totaled 28 assists, and Brittany
Newberry had a team-high 26 digs. Hess led both teams in blocks
with three solos and two assists.
Mandie Meyer and Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy combined to lead NMU
with 21 kills and five block assists.
The Lakers play host to Saginaw Valley State at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
