Box Score BIG RAPIDS - Lake Superior State eventually caught Ferris
State after missing a half dozen attempts to tie Thursday's Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball
showdown, but the Lakers couldn't close out the game and lost
60-59.
LSSU (7-4 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) shot 31.6 percent from the field
overall, including 28.1 percent in the second half while suffering
its second straight road loss. The Lakers were 10-of-29 from
three-point range for 34.5 percent. They made 6-of-15 three-point
shots in the second half.
Ronlea Peterson, who led LSSU with 16 points, canned a
three-pointer with 13:41 remaining to tie the game, 41-41. The
Lakers went on to lead by four points on two different occasions,
including a 56-52 edge with 4:19 to go.
Lake Superior State center Cassy Schemberger made two free
throws for a 59-58 LSSU lead with 50 second remaining. FSU's Kelsey
DeNoyelles answered with two free throws with 35 seconds left.
LSSU had two possessions and missed three shots during the final
25 seconds.
Maria Blazejewski scored 11 points for the Lakers, and
Schemberger and Shelle Rochon followed with nine each. Schemberger
led the Lakers in rebounds with eight. LSSU was 13-of-17 at the
free-throw line.
Peterson and Rochon were a combined 7-of-14 from three-point
range.
Tiara Adams totaled 16 points and six rebounds, and DeNoyelles
had 15 points to lead Ferris State (3-8 overall, 2-4 GLIAC). The
Bulldogs shot 51 percent from the field, including 3-of-9 from
three-point range. They made 7-of-11 free throws.
Both teams totaled 34 rebounds and combined to total 35
turnovers.
LSSU travels to Grand Valley State for a 1 p.m. tip-off
Saturday.
