into Thursday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
men's basketball opener after beating Alma 92-44 Monday at Bud
Cooper Gymnasium.
The Lakers travel to Saginaw Valley State for
a 6 p.m. league opener.
Freshman Cameron Metz scored 23 points, and sophomore Derek
Kinney had 12 to lead LSSU past Alma. The duo also combined to
total 13 rebounds. Junior Kyle Hunt finished with 11 points and
five assists, and senior Andrew Charlesworth scored nine points.
Sophomore Nic Jobe and Kinney led the Lakers in rebounds with seven
each, while Metz and senior Justin Williams had six each.
Alma (2-2) stayed with LSSU during the first 14 minutes of the
game. Charlesworth scored at 6:54 of the first half to tie it,
19-19, and ignite a 21-0 run. Hunt contributed two
field goals and a three-pointer to lead LSSU during its
scoring surge, which included six different
Lakers scorers. LSSU had a 42-22
command at halftime.
LSSU shot 50.8 percent from the field, including 5-of-15 from
three-point range. The Lakers made 21-of-28 free throws and
committed only nine turnovers. They out-rebounded the Scotts,
43-28.
Kevin Ginther scored nine points and Brett Lackie had six to
lead Alma, which shot 33.3 percent from the field. The Scotts made
4-of-19 three-point attempts and 6-of-11 free throws.
