Lakers come from behind to beat Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Lake Superior State snapped its road losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Western Michigan Friday. The Lakers are now 6-9-4 overall and 4-6-3-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Lakers, who scored three unanswered goals in the second period to come back from a 2-1 deficit, improved their road record to 1-7-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the CCHA.

Western Michigan (7-6-4 overall, 3-5-3-2 CCHA) started the goal scoring at 3:31 of the first period with a power-play goal. The Lakers tied the game with an unassisted goal from senior forward Tyson Hobbins. It was his first goal of the season.

The Broncos notched their final goal of the game at 4:24 of the second period.

Sophomore forward Ben Power (2-2—4) tallied the game-tying goal at 12:57. Sophomore Nick McParland (3-3—6) scored the game-winning power-play goal at 16:15. Two minutes later, freshman Dan Radke (2-3--5) made it 4-2.

Senior Rick Schofield (7-8--15) finished off the scoring with a goal at 13:37 of the third period. Domenic Monardo led the Lakers in assists with two, and Chad Nehring, Andrew Perreault, Colin Campbell, Kyle Jean, Matt Bruneteau and McParland added one each.

Freshman forward Dan Radke (2-3—5) also netted a goal for the Lakers.

LSSU went 1-for-5 on the power-play and held the Broncos to 1-for-4.

The Lakers were outshot 29-19, including a 12-1 disadvantage in the first period. Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka stopped 27 shots on goal. Western Michigan's Nick Pisellini totaled five saves through 40 minutes of play, and Jerry Kuhn made nine saves during the final 20 minutes.

The Lakers and Broncos will play game two of the series Saturday at 7:35 p.m. It will be broadcast live on 99.5 Yes FM.
