Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State, which suffered a
24-point loss at Grand Valley State in early January, went wire to
wire with GVSU in the rematch and pulled off a 69-62 home-court win
Thursday.
LSSU (13-10 overall, 10-9 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference) extended its win streak to three games and notched its
fourth win in five games. Junior guard Ronlea Peterson scored a
career-high 21 points, while freshman forward Maria Blazejewski
added 18 points to lead a balanced Laker attack.
Peterson, who scored 14 second-half points, stalled Grand
Valley's late comeback threat with a three-pointer at the 5:52
mark. She hit another trey with 2:46 to go, giving LSSU a
61-53 lead. Lake Superior State and Grand Valley State (17-7
overall, 14-5 GLIAC) traded points the rest of the way.
Blazejewski scored 13 points in the first half, which LSSU led
32-31. Nicole Marshall finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Emily Joseph contributed nine assists, and Cassy Schemberger led
the Lakers in rebounds with 10.
Lake Superior State shot 39.3 percent from the field, including
6-of-21 from three-point range. Joseph and Peterson were a combined
13-of-15 as LSSU made 19-of-24 free throws.
Alex Stelfox scored 14 points, and Briauna Taylor added 12
points and seven rebounds to lead GVSU, which shot 48.1 percent
from the field and made 3-of-14 three-point shots. Grand Valley
out-rebounded LSSU, 33-32.
LSSU scored 10 points off 23 GVSU turnovers.
Blazejewski and Marshall had three steals each for Lake Superior
State.
LSSU plays its final regular-season home game
against Ferris State at 1 p.m. Saturday.
