Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State seniors Scott Perkins,
Garrett Konuszewski and Jeremy Beasley topped off their final
regular-season appearance in Bud Cooper Gymnasium with a
hard-fought 69-66 victory over Ferris State.
LSSU (13-12 overall, 11-9 GLIAC) didn't expect another cakewalk
after beating the Bulldogs (14-11 overall, 12-8 GLIAC) by 26 points
on Jan. 7 in Big Rapids. Ferris State, which is 8-4 in its last 12
games, controlled most of the first half until Perkins and Kyle
Hunt led a 7-0 run that gave the Lakers a 22-21 lead with 6:59
remaining. The Bulldogs went ahead 29-28 at halftime.
Ferris State also led by as many as seven points,
49-42, midway through the second half. Lake Superior State
chipped away and went ahead 58-57 on a Derek Kinney layup with 6:45
to go.
LSSU forced two Bulldog turnovers and held FSU to one field goal
during the last four minutes of the second half. Lake Superior
State had no field goals, but was 6-for-9 at the free-throw line
during the final 3:49. Andrew Charlesworth had two key rebounds
down the stretch to help the Lakers secure the win.
Perkins scored 17 points, and Hunt totaled 14 points, seven
rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead LSSU. Konuszewski
finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and Micah Hudson came off
the bench to score 11 points.
LSSU shot 47.9 percent from the field, including 11-of-18 in the
second half. The Lakers made 4-of-17 three-point attempts, and
19-of-29 free throws.
Physical center Justin Keenan led Ferris State with 24 points
and six rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 38.6 percent from the field,
including 3-of-20 from three-point range. They were 19-of-26 at the
free-throw line.
LSSU out-rebounded Ferris State, 36-34.
The Lakers have yet to clinch at GLIAC Tournament berth, but
still have an outside shot at home-court advantage during the
quarterfinal round. They play their final regular-season games at
Michigan Tech Thursday and Northern Michigan Saturday.
