Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. - Lake Superior State lost 2-1 in overtime
Friday at the Berry Events Center, dropping its fourth straight
conference game with one more chance remaining to earn home ice for
the first round of the playoffs
The Lakers (15-15-5 overall, 10-14-3-2 Central Collegiate Hockey
Association), however, still own a six-goal lead over the Wildcats
(16-11-8 overall, 12-9-6-3 CCHA) in the battled for the Father
Cappo Cup.
Northern Michigan's Mark Olver netted a goal at 7:05, assisted
by Andrew Cherniwchan and Justin Florek, for a 1-0 Wildcat lead
that stood until midway through the third period.
LSSU senior defender Simon Gysbers (6-9--15) tied the game at
12:29 of the third to send the Lakers and Wildcats into overtime.
Gysbers' goal was an unassisted goal.
The Wildcats took three-points from the Lakers with an overtime
goal at 3:55. Olver's game-winner was his second goal of the game
and was assisted by Jared Brown and Florek.
The Lakers out-shot Northern Michigan, 28-20. Junior
goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped at total of 18 shots in
63:46 minutes of play. Wildcat Brian Stewart played a total of
63:45 minutes and stopped a total of 27 shots-on-goal.
The Wildcats and Lakers were both 0-for-3 on the
power-play.
Lake Superior will be back in action Saturday against the
Wildcats at 7:35 P.M. With eighth-place Ohio State's 6-2 loss to
No. 2 Miami, the Lakers still have a shot at home ice for the first
round of the CCHA Playoffs. They trail the Buckeyes by three
points.
LSSU is 2-1-0 against NMU this season and leads the Cappo Cup
series, 12-6.
